Chapter Three

Atticus sat in the comfortable chair that Victor had left him and studied Tala and Cornelia. It was obvious the two of them were good at their job. Cornelia wanted to go after this Kahn character right away but Tala was resisting. She was the only one of them that had dealt with Kahn, so Atticus was on her side. She had beat him once, she could do it again.

“I’m just saying we need to take a step back,” Tala insisted. “Not stop.”

“Okay, I get that but Kahn is killing women out there,” Cornelia disagreed. “We need to act quickly before someone else is kidnapped and murdered.”

“We do need to act fast, but we need to act smart,” Tala countered. Just then Tala’s computer beeped. “And this is our first step,” she added, grinning.

“What is?” Atticus asked, joining the conversation.

“I’ve been working on tracking Kahn’s credit cards,” Tala explained. “There’s too much information. The problem is that Kahn has more credit than any other man I’ve ever encountered. It was taking time to track them all. So, I plugged it into a program of mine to narrow the search. And that beep means the results are finally ready.”

Atticus moved in behind Tala so he could see her screen. He wasn’t sure what he was looking at. In his opinion, Tala hadn’t narrowed down anything.

Cornelia joined them. After several minutes she smiled. “Okay,” she glanced at Tala. “Okay then, here we go. You take page one and I’ll take page two. We should be able to narrow this down pretty quickly.”

Tala hit print and waited while the two pages slowly slid from the portable device. Cornelia retrieved them and handed one page to Tala.

An hour later Tala stood, smiling.

“You found it?” Cornelia questioned.

“I think so,” Tala said as she pulled her laptop in front of her and punched in the information. “Bingo!” she said triumphantly a few minutes later.

“What did you find?” Atticus asked, still completely clueless.

“There’s a charge on one of Kahn’s credit cards for one dollar at the Regency Esquire Hotel,” Tala answered absently. “Now if I could just hack into their system, we would know which room he was staying in.”

Cornelia moved to stand behind Tala. “Don’t get too excited, you’ll never get in.”

“Why a dollar?” Atticus questioned.

“Nowadays, no hotel will deal in cash,” Cornelia explained. “So, when you check in the clerk runs the card. Not for the entire amount, just a hold. It’s like insurance to make sure the card is legit. Then at check out, you can either put the entire bill on the card or pay in cash. Kahn will pay cash, but the charge remains until he leaves. Once the bill is settled, the hold is canceled. Kahn is staying at the Regency, no question.”

“Hum,” Atticus said, settling back in his chair to wait. There was a lot he didn’t know about the current world he was living in. Shutting himself off for so long apparently had its drawbacks. Atticus sobered as he studied Tala.
